Registration Policies

These policies describe how dogs are registered, documented, and maintained within the APCA registry.

1. Eligibility

Dogs registered with APCA must be of documented Presa Canario parentage consistent with the association's breed standard. Litters must be submitted by a member in good standing, and individual dog registrations must reference verifiable sire and dam records where available.

2. Documentation

Registration applications require accurate identification of sire, dam, breeder, date of birth, and current owner. Supporting documentation may be requested at APCA's discretion to confirm the accuracy of an application.

3. Microchip Requirement

APCA encourages and, for full registration, generally requires that dogs be permanently identified with a microchip, with the identification number recorded as part of the dog's registry file.

4. Naming Conventions

Registered names should reflect the dog's kennel of origin where applicable and must not duplicate an existing registered name in a way that creates confusion within the registry. APCA reserves the right to request a name be revised prior to finalizing registration.

5. Litter Registration Timelines

Breeders are expected to submit litter registration applications within a reasonable period following whelping. Timely submission helps ensure accurate records of parentage and date of birth for each puppy in the litter.

6. DNA and Parentage Verification

APCA may request DNA testing or other parentage verification in cases where documentation is incomplete, disputed, or otherwise requires confirmation before a registration can be finalized.

7. Registration Status Definitions

  • Active — Registration is current and in good standing.
  • Pending — Application submitted and under review.
  • Limited — Registered with restrictions, such as ineligibility for breeding.
  • Inactive — Registration is not currently maintained as active.
  • Deceased — Dog is recorded as deceased in the registry.

8. Corrections and Appeals

Owners or breeders who believe a registry record contains an error may request a correction through APCA. Disputed decisions regarding registration status may be appealed to the Board for review.

9. Ownership Transfers

Change of ownership should be reported to APCA to keep the registry accurate. Transfers typically require identification of both the previous and new owner and confirmation of the dog's registration number.
